Balme – Les Carroz Hill Climb

Climbing a mountain pass!  Many a cycling enthusiast, following in the path of Tour de France “pros”, has attempted to climb these legendary passes!  The latest to join the list of twenty or so “notable hill climbs” is Les Carroz’s Pierre Carrée pass!  From the beginning of July, the “Balme – Les Carroz – Col de Pierre Carrée” climb will be lined with GSM beacons and kilometre markers to indicate the average gradient, maximum percentage incline and distance.  Microchips will be available from the Tourist Office for cyclists to record and calculate their time for this hill climb.  A reference time will be set by Patrice Halgand at the beginning of the summer.  Why not be one of the first to test yourself against him?

Wild Golf, Tignes

NEW SPORT! NOUVEAU SPORT!
11th to 13rd July 2009
Any swing goes! Le swing dans tous ses états!

Wild golf TignesSince the year 2000, a new sport has been developing fast – street golf. In this sport that has been directly imported from Germany, immaculate greens are exchanged for the streets. With an infinite choice of potential courses, the only rule to be followed is safety first. Traditional golfing equipment is used but with safe plastic balls. Tignes is a sporty, young and quirky resort and offers the added extra of having a varied and unique natural playground.

The idea is to present the summer side of Tignes in a way that has never been done before, in partnership with “19ème Trou” (19th Hole), the Parisian Street Golf Association.

The aim is to emphasise Tignes’ quirky nature by taking a different approach to traditional sports, creating a regular and hip event in Tignes and encouraging a new type of media coverage.

In Tignes, street golf becomes wild golf!

An original and out there competition open to beginners, experts, sportsmen and women and VIP guests alike…
Over the weekend, golfers who have signed up to the Wild Golf competition will play the unusual holes scouted out by the organisation which are spread out over the whole of Tignes. Anywhere goes and all shots are allowed – from the glacier, over the lake or even via the Aiguille Percée!

During the competition, beginner street golf practice areas will be set up in resort. Open to everybody, these urban courses will be run by members of the “19th Hole” association who will be on hand to pass on the “street” philosophy.

Glacier skiing: Europe’s ten top glaciers

Tignes, France  La Grand Motte glacier offers skiing above Tignes from 3,030m-3,455m with access by both an underground funicular and fast but more scenic chair lifts. Tignes Park in SummerThere is a good variety of terrain with red, blue and black runs and a mixture of chair lifts and drag lifts. Long descents all the way back to Tignes are possible during the winter months.  Click here for accommodation in Tignes

Stubai, Austria  The Stubai Glacier is the largest glacier in Austria, 20 minutes from the resort of Neustift. Lying south of Innsbruck in the Stubai Valley, the glacier has a huge variety of runs, mostly blues and reds between 2,300m and 3,200m. There are fabulous off-piste runs.

Engelberg, Switzerland  The world’s first rotating cable car takes you to Titlis at 3,020m above the resort of Engelberg. Huge descents on and off piste are possible from this high altitude down 2,000m to the resort. Due to the glaciers shrinking here it is no longer possible to ski in the summer months as the resort has been protecting its glaciers by covering them during this period. This area is less well-known than some of the bigger glacier ski areas despite being close to Lucerne and Zurich.

Saas-Fee, Switzerland  Saas-Fee is a traditional car-free resort with skiing at Mittelallalin at over 3,600m. The glacier at Saas-Fee has 20km of pistes and is easily accessible by the Metro Alpin which is an underground funicular. There are also stunning off-piste routes down the many glaciers.

Kaprun, Austria  One hour from Salzburg, above the pretty village of Kaprun, is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. It is down the valley from the popular resort, Zell am See. The glacier has a large ski area with lots of varied runs, mostly intermediate standard, up to 3,030m. The Gletscher terrain park is open almost year round.

Zermatt, Switzerland  Zermatt’s glacier is located at Klein Matterhorn and is where the Zermatt pistes link to nearby Cervinia in Italy. The pistes on the glacier are graded blue and red and are not particularly steep but usually have the best snow in Zermatt. There is a year-round half-pipe on the glacier.

Hintertux, Austria  Hintertux is a tiny village at the far end of the Tux valley. The glacier is accessed by lifts which are a 15-minute walk from the village. The Hintertux glacier has particularly challenging and interesting runs when compared with most pistes on glaciers and claims to have the steepest glacier skiing in Austria. It also boasts the highest World Cup half-pipe in Europe. It is 45 minutes from the popular resort, Mayrhofen.

Les Deux Alpes, France  Les Deux Alpes is between Grenoble and Briançon, around two hours from Lyons. Its glacier, Glacier du Mont de Lans, offers skiing up to 3570m. From the top you can access the off-piste playground of La Grave. Les Deux Alpes has a large popular terrain park on its glacier during the summer months.  .

Solden, Austria  Solden has two glaciers, the Tiefenbach and Rettenbach, and this makes up 39km of pistes. The glaciers are linked by the Glacier Express gondola. The Rettenbach glacier has a ski test centre with all the latest skis to try out and a fun terrain park.

Passo Tonale, Italy  Passo Tonale is a purpose-built village set on a high pass in Trentino. The Presena Glacier is open in the summer and has a variety of slopes that are graded from blue to black but with just two drag lifts. Fantastic off-piste runs from the glacier, up to 10 miles long.

Montreux Jazz Festival 2009

Held on the eastern shore of beautiful Lake Geneva, the Montreux Jazz Festival attracts around 200,000 people each year. Specialising in jazz, blues, rock and pop, the festival provides groove busting beats that make you want to move your body or just listen in musical awe. The Montreux Jazz Festival has hosted the likes of Stan Getz, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Mingus and Dexter Gordon since its inception in 1967 and this year’s festival will see the likes of rock legend Lenny Kravitz and R’nB queen Alicia Keys. Head to the fringe ‘Off Festival’ for free open-air concerts, providing a platform for up-and-coming artists.

Deep Purple made Montreux famous with their song “Smoke on the Water”, which tells the events of 1971, when a Frank Zappa fan with a flare gun set the Montreux Casino on fire.

We all came out to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline / To make records with a mobile – We didn’t have -much time / Frank Zappa & the Mothers were at the best place around / But some stupid with a flare gun burned the -place to the ground / Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

Venue: Various. Montreux is 56 miles (90 km) from Geneva
Date: July 2009 TBA
